The Egypt SSP Office in Cairo hosted a Research Priority Setting workshop, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), on March 2, 2016. The workshop brought together national experts from policy, civil society, and research and IFPRI researchers with relevant international expertise.
The general objective of the workshop was to identify and prioritize strategic research areas for IFPRI’s Egypt SSP. More specifically, the goals of the workshop were to:
- Learn about Egypt’s main development challenges and opportunities
- Understand which governmental and non-governmental organizations and research institutions engage in which areas and are concerned with which issues
- Identify existing knowledge gaps and IFPRI’s potential contributions—within each of the four themes.
- Discuss innovative research methods and issues of data availability and explore opportunities for potential collaborations in future activities of the Egypt SSP
The research areas relate to four broad research themes that are consistent with Egypt’s Sustainable Development Strategy and IFPRI’s Strategy:
- Theme 1: Economic Transformation and Rural Development
- Theme 2: Institutions and Social Inclusion
- Theme 3: Food Supply and Natural Resources
- Theme 4: Public Health and Nutrition
To prioritize research topics within these four themes, the workshop employed an innovative approach, incl. rapid fire presentations and carousel based small group discussions.
