The IFPRI-Egypt Seminar Series is part of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded project called “Evaluating Impact and Building Capacity” (EIBC) that is implemented by IFPRI. The seminar supports USAID’s Agribusiness for Rural Development and Increasing Incomes (ARDII) project’s objectives.

"Women Empowerment for Revitalizing Rural Areas in Egypt"
Women in rural areas face specific issues to access their economic and social rights. Those issues are linked to a variety of factors, such as socially prescribed gender roles; unequal gender division of labour in and outside the home; and discriminatory norms and practices. Those factors not only limit women’s opportunities, capabilities, choices and agency, but they also have a negative impact on the Egyptian agricultural sector.
As well as being a goal in itself, Women’s empowerment is also a prerequisite to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goals 1 (No poverty); 2 (Zero hunger); and 3 (Good health and well-being). Gender equality and women’s empowerment are key quality criteria for enhancing the relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural and rural development strategies, policies and programmes focusing on alleviating hunger and poverty. Programmes aiming to foster women’s empowerment in the agriculture sector have the potential to improve household dietary practices, increase women’ and children’s access to healthcare services, and care-giving practices.
