In partnership with the National Nutrition Committee & the National Nutrition Institute
"Research to support the 100 Million Healthy Lives Initiative: Food availability, access and consumption patterns in Egypt"
The 100 Million Health initiative aims to raise the awareness of Egyptians to the importance of their health through screening for Hepatitis C, indirectly shifting the attention to the importance of healthy food diets and its relation to non-communicable diseases, including obesity.
In order to provide scientific evidence to support the 100 Million Health initiative, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in collaboration with the National Nutrition Committee (affiliated by the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology) are organizing a series of three seminars as part of the IFPRI Egypt Seminar Series.
This second seminar in the series assesses three critical aspects of food and nutrition security: availability, access and utilization of food and will provide answers to questions such as what food is available for consumption in Egypt from production and imports; what kind of food do different people consume and why; what are possible interventions to help people access healthier foods?
CAPMAS and the National Nutrition institute (NNI) will present data and findings on food consumption patterns in Egypt. IFPRI will share international experiences and evidence on household dietary diversity in Egypt. The Ministry of Health (MoHP) will present an update on the role of the "100 Million Health" presidential initiative and its impact on increasing health awareness among Egyptians. The active discussion will set the floor to identify the barriers to healthy eating habits, that include, household food insecurity, health and nutrition illiteracy, income poverty and food subsidies. In addition, the role of the private sector and the contribution of food industry and civil society to shaping the Egyptians food consumption patterns will be highlighted.
