The IFPRI-Egypt Seminar Series is part of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded project called “Evaluating Impact and Building Capacity” (EIBC) that is implemented by IFPRI. The seminar supports USAID’s Agribusiness for Rural Development and Increasing Incomes (ARDII) project’s objectives.
"Beyond COVID-19: Strengthening Climate Resilience
in Egypt’s Agricultural Sector"
The COVID-19 pandemic is a powerful reminder of the importance of a resilient agricultural sector for food security and livelihoods. In fact, the agri-food system has been critical in many countries to cushion the negative impacts of the current crisis on economic growth, jobs and household incomes, including in Egypt. However, the changing climate is posing a significant threat to the future of agriculture in Egypt and solutions as to how to make the agricultural sector climate resilient are urgently needed.
Considering the expected impacts of the changing climate on agriculture, and existing expectations for agricultural production, Egypt’s farmers need options to increase agricultural productivity and diversify production, while utilizing land and water resources more efficiently and reducing GHG emissions. This seminar presented research findings from an assessment of alternative adaptation options at the farm and policy levels. On-farm options include, among others, changing planting dates, improved seed technology, and alternative irrigation technologies, to name a few. Off-farm options include enhanced efficiency of farm input delivery and post-harvest processing. Other strategies will be examined at the national level.
Specifically, the webinar will present; 1) alternative climate futures, as estimated by various climate models, and their effects on agricultural productivity, farmer profitability and welfare; 2) the effectiveness of up-scaling climate-resilient technologies; and 3) the policies and investment requirements to promote the resiliency of Egyptian agriculture.
The presentation is followed by comments from representatives of the government, academia, and international organizations.
