Jo Swinnen was awarded the Quality of Communications Award for the book COVID-19 and Global Food Security (editors, Johan Swinnen and John McDermott) and the blog posts, events, and distribution channels used to disseminate it. The Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) award recognizes publications that demonstrate superior communication of concepts or subject matter in agricultural or applied economics.
COVID-19 leveraged IFPRI's existing expertise and research, novel approaches to data collection, and network of partners to provide critical insight and analysis during the early months of the pandemic of the effects on global poverty, food security and nutrition, food trade and supply chains, gender, employment, and a variety of policy interventions, as well as reflections on how we can use these lessons to better prepare for future pandemics. In the first six months after publication, the e-book was downloaded more than 10,170 times from IFPRI’s website and more than 3,500 times from RePEc. It also received more than 23,080 page views on Google Books. The e-book’s webpage has received 7,000 views from users in more than 130 countries. The analysis in the book was also promoted through numerous events, blog posts, posting on open access platforms and social media, a special newsletter, and an interactive webpage, each of which received thousands of views.
