Overview
Water, energy and food security are important human development goals that are closely inter-connected. Food systems rely heavily on the availability of energy and high-quality water. This connection spans nearly every stage of production and agricultural value chains, including aspects such as labor and mechanization, agro-chemicals, cooling, and transportation. The Nexus of Water Food and Energy (NWFE) is a key approach used to identify these linkages between these sectors, and it aims to leverage synergies and minimize trade-offs. It provides a holistic framework and promotes integrated governance and planning across the water, energy and agri-food sectors, identifies entry points for action that supports multiple goals, and supports the optimization of resource allocation decisions.
This participatory 2 half-days learning event will present the results of a systematic review that identified pathways for food system transformation that consider a nexus perspective drawing on literature from the MENA region and Egypt. The goal is to co-identify water-, energy-, and ecosystem health benefits and challenges of proposed food security programs and projects to reduce the costs of trade-offs and improve the synergies.
