News: IFPRI’s Participation at ENID’s Annual Conference

IFPRI’s Xiaobo Zhang and Fatma Abdelaziz gave two presentations at the 2019 annual conference for the Egypt’s Network for Integrated Development (ENID/ElNidaa). This year’s conference title was “Clusters and Economic Development in the South”. It was held in Luxor on February 14th and 15th, under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Egypt’s Prime Minister. During the conference, Xiaobo Zhang gave a presentation about China’s experience in cluster-based development. In addition, Fatma Mahfouz presented IFPRI’s work on clusters in the agricultural and food processing sector, by showcasing IFPRI’s preliminary findings on the medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) cluster in Upper Egypt.

In Egypt, like everywhere, growing energy demand is increasingly at odds with the urgent need to control carbon emissions.
Nationally, energy use is rising approximately 6.5 percent a year. To keep up, the government has promoted growth in production of natural gas and other conventional energy sources. As gas production has risen, the share of renewable energy sources in power generation has shrunk. Silk industry and its historic expansion is a good example of the globalization and can easily describe the massive infiltration of the Chinese production in the world market. In fact the Sericulture industry and the cultivation of Mulberry trees are labor intensive activities which create employment opportunities for women and youth in the poorest rural areas.
