Yemen is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises in recent history as a result of the ongoing conflict, which began more than eight years ago. Today, the country faces a food crisis of unprecedented scale. Despite continuing humanitarian aid, about 17 million people — that is, about half the population — are food insecure (WFP 2023), and more than half a million children under the age of five are estimated to suffer from severe acute malnutrition (UNICEF 2023)
The Russia-Ukraine Conflict and Global Food Security
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, sparking fears of a global food crisis, IFPRI responded rapidly to the need for information and policy advice to address the crisis. From the first moments of the conflict, a new IFPRI blog series provided critical information and insights into the impacts on food security, caused by rising food, fertilizer, and fuel prices and trade disruptions, for vulnerable countries and regions.
Vacancy: Research Analyst
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Senior Research Assistant for a one-year, renewable appointment in its Egypt Office. The Senior Research Assistant will have a Master’s degree or its equivalent in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Statistics or closely related fields, and a minimum of 3 years’ work experience. The successful candidate will work with senior research staff in evaluating programs and policies, with a focus on social protection and agriculture interventions in Yemen and other research support activities related to IFPRI’s work in the Middle East and North Africa region.

تشهد منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا تراجع معدل الأمن الغذائي بسبب تداعيات الحرب الدائرة في أوكرانيا والصراع الجاري في السودان والأزمات الممتدة التي يتعرض لها اليمن والتضخم العالمي الحادث في أسعار المواد الغذائية، علماً بأن مصر تندرج ضمن قائمة البلدان التي يشتد تضرّرها منها[1]. ووفق البنك الدولي، يُقدر معدل انعدام الأمن الغذائي في عام ٢٠٢٣ بنحو ٦,٤٪ من المصريين، وهو ما يُمثل ٦,٩ مليون نسمة تعاني من سوء التغذية في مصر. [2] وفضلاً عن ذلك، يطرح موضوع الأمن الغذائي المزيد من التحديات أمام الأمهات والأطفال، حيث يتسبب نقص التغذية السليمة خلال فترة الحمل أو في مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة في ارتفاع مخاطر الإصابة بالتقزُّم والهزال وتراجع نواتج التعليم.[3]
