Undernutrition, a type of malnutrition, results from inadequate quantity and quality of food, which manifests itself in underweight in the general population, or stunting and wasting in children below 5 years of age. The prevalence of undernourishment, notably in the Arab Least Developed Countries (LDC) including Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and Mauritania, has been discussed at length, with a looming famine crisis unfolding in the case of Yemen.
Publication: Beyond the business case for agricultural value chain development: An economywide approach applied to Egypt

This paper goes beyond the “business” case for agricultural value chain development and presents an economy-wide framework to make the “development” case. We show that there are several key transmission channels that determine the economy-wide impacts of promoting various value chains, including forward and backward economic linkages, price responses, and net employment effects.

Phasing out energy subsidies is high on the agenda of policymakers in several Middle Eastern and North African countries. The impact of such reform can vary widely depending on the country and policy. This paper contributes to the existing literature by examining the phasing out of energy subsidies in Egypt under alternative economic scenarios.
