Location: Climate Change Information Center (CCIC), Agriculture Research Institute (Google Maps)
Overview
Climate change poses a significant challenge to agriculture in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events are impacting the productivity and sustainability of agricultural practices. This region, already characterized by arid and semi-arid climates, faces heightened risks of water scarcity and heat stress on crops. As the effects of climate change intensify, understanding and implementing adaptive strategies in agricultural systems become imperative to ensure food security and sustainable livelihoods for the communities in MENA.
Climate Change Future Watch (CCFW) is an online tool enabling users to explore potential climate futures for specific MENA countries until 2050. This platform calculates and produces forecasts detailing the consequences of diverse climate change scenarios on the agricultural sector, along with evaluating the efficacy of policy measures to mitigate these impacts. Utilizing variables such as production, yield, and area, the tool illustrates the forthcoming influence of climate change on various food commodities.
IFPRI, under the USAID project EIBC, and in collaboration with CCIC, was eagerly anticipating the public launch of the new tool. The event featured presentations and demonstrations of the tool, accompanied by a panel discussion involving climate change experts from the MENA region.
